"KOTO" Audiovisual Design

Project Overview

Our task was to analyze a chosen music sequence and find out how syntax, structure, dramaturgy, and system can be transferred into a visual concept.

Eine Musiksequenz wird durch die systematische Anwendung gestaltungsmethodischer Strategien in ein äquivalentes, gleichsam vielschichtiges, visuell konsistent interagierendes Zeichenrepertoire (Film) übersetzt.

Visual Concept

A piece of music played with analog instruments sounds different every time. The same can be observed in painting with a brush; each stroke is unique. Like a painting, this music piece builds up with time. We took this analogy to visualize a discourse between the analogue and digital world.
Making Of

The song
In "Koto," analogue and digital instruments were used. CloZee draws her power from a bold simplicity. Consistency is created by very strict and minimalistic patterns.

Defining a system
We decieded on a variation of an isometric grid, which represents the strict and perfect structure of the digital world, It support the limited ranges of notesand frequent repetitions.
Molding each instrument
Based on the grid, each instrument was assigned a visual appearance according to its character and our association. This not only referred to position, size, color, and rotation but also to its appearance in time and movement.

Technical additions
To intensify the image of a landscape and enhance the natural feeling, each instrument was placed on its own layer. Camera movement and focal length create the illusion of a shifting landscape.
